Adam Ulamah once again proved the King of rapid chess as he
tops the KCA Individual Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Star City, Asia City
Complex, Kota Kinabalu on Saturday 19th January. He scored 6.5 out
of 7 points, only drawing to 2nd place and beat Ahmad Wadudi who
also have 6.5 points on tie-break. This is the 4th in a row champion
for Adam, who previously won the UMS Open, Kudat Mengayau Open and Sandakan
Open. He only missed a half point tie-break in the last September Sandakan Open
held at Kinabatangan when he placed 2nd. 81 players took part in the
tournament which saw players coming as far from Keningau, Semporna, Ranau and
Lahad Datu.
3rd place went to Saraggan Amir, fresh from
winning 2nd place at the 4th IBH KK SpeedMaster last
week. 4th to 10th saw Abdul Sahim Wising, Al Kamil Kamin, Masrin
Erowan, Adam Arip, Sulaiman Jamal, Mohd Noor Othman and UMS rising chess player
Ali Akbar Nadzrif.
In the junior categories, Irfan Syahmi Rusyaidi won the
under-18 boys title. Second place went to Azman Babah followed by Hafiz Jeffly.
The girls winner was Elaine Jane Sipin. Second place went to Meriam bte Berjaya
and Nurul Ashikin Nasir in third. In the boys under-15, Mohd Nazri Wailin was
the winner followed by Mohd Syuib bin Hj Saini and Gary Mc Quintin. The winner
for the girls under-15 was Claribel Crystal Lupi. Nurul Farhana Nasir in second
place and Esther Carolina in third.
Special prizes for the best veteran player won by Hosdi
Soupin, Best Women won by Evelyn Leong, Best Unrated won by Jan Basri and Best
Under 12 boys won by Abubakar Rashid from SK Tidung Tabin Sandakan.
The 2nd day of the tournament saw team Riashah
Sdn Bhd team emerged as the clear champion, beating all 22 other teams. The
team members consists of Abdul Sahim Wising, Mohd Noor Othman and former state
junior player Jan Basri, winning 6 games and losing only one game, accumulating
16 game points out of possible 21. 2nd
place goes to the last year team event champion, Custom Chess Club which
consists of Saraggan Amir, Al Kamil Kamin and Junaidih Halil. 3rd
place went to Black Knight team from KK, South East Knight from Semporna,
Master Piece from KK, South East Monster from Semporna and 3 Kings Gambit from
KK.
Team Pendidikan consists of Adam Arip, Walter Julius and
Mohd Aizan Ermando won the Best Government team category, while SEMSALD A which
consists of Irfan Syahmi, Mohd Syuib and Azman Babah won the best school
category. Masrin Erowan, Al Kamil Kamin and Abdul Wahab Abu Bakar were the
winners in Board 1-3 respectively.
The tournament director, Charles Lucas thanked all the
players and the manager of Riashah Sdn Bhd, Mr Mohd Hussein Zakaria, for the
support given on the very first individual and team rapid chess organized by
Kinabalu Chess Academy. The tournament was sponsored by Riashah Sdn Bhd.
